Bio
Rod MacGillivray is a conductor, performer, and teacher of trombone, euphonium, and tuba. He is the music director of the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts Brass Ensemble (MCPA Brass Ensemble), music director of the Mersey Band in Liverpool, NS, and director of Scotia Brass in Halifax, NS. Rod is currently serves on the brass faculty at the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts, and has taught at Acadia University, Adams State University, Kenyon College, and Mount Vernon Nazarene University as a brass teacher and wind conductor. Rod has performed with such ensembles as the Alabama Opera Orchestra, Ohio Light Opera, Northern Kentucky Symphony, Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra, Edmonton Symphony, and PEI Symphony. Locally, he has performed with Nova Sinfonia, the Chebucto Orchestra, Scotia Brass, and the Bridgewater Fire Department Band. Rod is currently the bass trombone of the Chester Brass Band. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Mount Allison University, a Master of Music degree from Temple University, and doctoral studies at The Ohio State University (trombone) and the University of Alabama (wind band conducting). He has studied trombone with Blair Bollinger, Joseph Duchi, Ted Griffith, and Gordon McGowan and conducting with Gerald L. Welker, Russell Mikkelson, Richard Blatti, Dwight Oltman, and James Smith.
Outlook
I have been playing for almost 40 years and teaching over 25 years. I have been very lucky to have had many great teachers, mentors, colleagues, friends, and musical experiences in my life and I look forward to seeing how new generations of students will succeed with their musical goals and dreams!
